"New gateways & future fairs"
1043 S. Main St.
Dayton, Ohio 45458
Two reliefs which flank the entrance gate to the county fairgrounds, installed during the construction of the fairgrounds in 1959. Done in high relief, they are stylized using concave and convex forms in high relief and textures in contrast to polished surfaces. Each side has figures shown doing traditional fair activities, or images of typical rural life. The proper right relief shows a man and a boy, hand tools and farm machinery, animals, and crops like grain or produce. On top are three sulky racers (harness racers) headed towards the fair. On the proper left relief are a woman and a girl, small farm animals, fruit and vegetables, and an orchard and garden. On the top of that relief are three hens and a rooster.
